A Rose By Any Other Name...

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" is a frequently referenced part of William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, in which Juliet seems to argue that it does not matter that Romeo is from her rival's house of Montague, that is, that he is named "Montague." The reference is often used to imply that the names of things do not affect what they really are.

There are names for different diets,... but does their name affect what they really are? Ultimately, they all reflect the same thing: the quest to be healthy and feel great!

The truth is, there is no ONE diet that is best for everyone. Each of us is at a different place in our health journey. And we each have unique biochemical needs and lifestyles.

So the goal becomes less, to perfect your eating within the confines of a diet with a catchy name. But more, to commit yourself to continually learning, and growing, and respecting others' places in their health journeys, wherever that may be.

Today, you may believe in your approach to food. And in the future, you may come to find that the approach is no longer in line with your needs. You will adjust, and again move forth in your personal health journey.

So, by this token, is a diet by any other name just as good? I believe whenever it's in the Spirit of moving toward greater health,... absolutely yes!

Spring is on the Way,... Simple Steps to Detox

Winter can be exhausting! And it can also kick the heck out of our intentions. Sure, we meant to step it back into gear once the new year came. But as Spring approaches, many of us are left feeling overwhelmed with the the habits of hibernation: comfort foods, less activity, isolation, maybe a bit heavy on the vino?!

Often times, the biggest ROAD BLOCK is the planning process of how/when we're going to take control and get our energy and health back again. I refer to this as PARALYSIS by ANALYSIS!

The following are 5 simple ways you can begin TODAY to regain your normally energetic self, without having to battle the planning stage. As we all know,... getting started is the hardest part!

#1 MOVE A LITTLE: Moving your body releases all kinds of feel good hormones and will noticeably increase your energy levels almost immediately! You don't have to go to a gym or even have equipment. An idea could be alternating days of a 20 minute walk on your lunch break (grab a co-worker or two), with doing a 3 minute resistance routine beside your bed before your morning shower. Something like 20 jumping jacks, 20 pushups (knees or toes), 20 lunges, and a 30 second plank for example.

#2 DRINK MORE WATER: In our busy lives, we often ignore the body's first signal of dehydration: thirst. It is also common to misinterpret thirst as hunger, leading to overeating. When thirst is ignored, we succumb to the next symptoms: headaches and fatigue. Sound familiar? Water is used in almost every metabolic process in the body and is particularly key in detoxification pathways. So, drink up!

#3 EAT SOMETHING GREENChlorophyll, the naturally-occurring green pigment found in plants is an incredible body detoxifier! It binds to toxins, is a powerful antioxidant, and supports immune function. Grab a salad for your work lunch, throw some spinach into your morning smoothie, or add a head of broccoli to tonights casserole!

#4 POOP: Yep, you read that right! Elimination through the bowels is your main export of bodily toxins. Most of us require 1-2 complete eliminations per day to maintain a healthy level of daily detoxification. If you struggle with constipation, increase your fibre and water intake. If that's not doing it, seek the counsel of a healthcare professional.

#5 BREATHE: In addition to generally keeping you alive, deep diaphragmatic breathing supports the lymphatic system to filter what can otherwise become stagnant toxins. Try some "Three Part Breaths" right where you are! Inhale, hold, and exhale, slowly to a count, and gradually lengthen your count as your capacity increases.

There IS a glimmer of hope out there for us as the days are getting longer and the snowbanks getting smaller. As Spring approaches, there is no better time to begin shaking off the winter blah's, using these simple techniques for detoxing our bodies, and restoring our energy!
